Year Two and What's Next
It’s been two years, all. Well, over two years because I first put my “Coming Soon” post up on April 26, 2022, but who’s counting, right? Yeesh, Taking Up More Room’s second year has been pretty wild.
(Keep reading for a special offer at the end of the post.)
As those of you who regularly read Taking Up More Room know, I’ve been going to a lot of theatrical releases over the past year, so many that the staff at the theater I frequent are getting to where they know me on sight. We’ll even chat about the movies sometimes. One lady, for instance, when she saw my ticket for One Life told me, “Bring Kleenex.”
I’m not the only regular, though. There’s also Sam, a guy who’s been at the theater almost as much as I have, at least for the first part of this year. It was not unusual to see him in the Assistance Required row in a seat next to his wheelchair with a big bucket of popcorn and a giant fountain drink. All the staff knew him and said hi to him, and Sam and I sometimes smiled knowingly at each other whenever we ended up at the same movie.
I’ve also started dialoguing with some of you a little bit in the comment sections and on Notes, which is fun, and honestly one of my favorite parts of blogging and film writing. Movie geekdom is a friendly thing. That said, here’s what I see in the future for Taking Up More Room, at least the foreseeable future.
As we all know, 2023 limped along despite the strikes with a respectable amount of new movies coming out on a regular basis, and the beginning of 2024 has been more of the same. Looking at this summer, though, the reserves seem to be drying up a bit, as there aren’t a whole lot of summer blockbusters coming out. I can’t speak for anyone else’s locale, but in my area, interspersed between the few new feature films are a lot of operas, sporting events, and repertory screenings.
We’re not completely destitute, of course. I’m looking forward to The Watchers, so keep an eye out for my review of that, plus Twisters is on the horizon, although in that case I’m more curious than anything. I saw the original movie in the theater in 1996, and I know this one isn’t going to be the same without Bill Paxton, rest his soul, but it might still be fun. A Quiet Place: Day One might be interesting as well, but I keep wondering when we’re going to see some alien tails get kicked. Day One is the third Quiet Place movie, guys. Let the characters move forward, please and thank you.
Other than that, unless anyone lives in a bigger market or has an arthouse theater within reach, well, things are definitely thin, at least in the theatrical release department.
Streaming, however, is a different story, and there’s some crazy stuff I’ve been neglecting to cover from the various services. I’ve kinda gotten away from that in the past year, and we’re badly in need of some quirk. Put it this way: May’s got some fun things in store, and after that, we’ll see what happens. The other advantage of cutting back on theatrical releases a little bit is that it will allow me to build up a post reserve and take breaks now and then.
OK, now for that special offer I told you about: For the next two months, because the number two is a thing, paid subscriptions to Taking Up More Room will be twenty percent off! So if any of you have ever thought about upgrading to a Monthly or Yearly level subscription, but were kind of on the fence about it, here’s a chance to try it out (Find the link here). Or if you’re a casual reader, please don’t hesitate to become a free subscriber as well. The offer expires on June 30, 2024.
Thanks heaps to everyone who’s read, subscribed and commented over the past year, and here’s to an exciting Year Three. You all are awesome!
