Happy New Year! Hard to believe it’s 2024, right? I hope everyone is enjoying their holidays, which have no doubt flown by. Who else is up for another week of vacay? I know I am.
Oh, wait. I do have another week of vacay. Heh. I’m not bragging. Much. Anyway…
Since none of us have the luxury of infinite holidays, I have something else that’s nice, if I do say so myself, and that is the unveiling of two new features: Referrals and Group Subscriptions.
What are those all about? Well, Referrals are an option Substack writers have to incentivize subscriber perks, and it’s not so much “Pay To Play” as it is “Join the Party,” with different tiers based on the number of referrals a subscriber makes. If you enjoy Taking Up More Room, it would mean the world to me if you invited friends to subscribe and read with us. If you refer friends, you will receive benefits that give you special access to Taking Up More Room.
How to participate
1. Share Taking Up More Room. When you use the referral link below, or the “Share” button on any post, you'll get credit for any new subscribers. Simply send the link in a text, email, or share it on social media with friends.
2. Earn benefits. When more friends use your referral link to subscribe (free or paid), you’ll receive special benefits.
Get a 1 month comp for 3 referrals
Get a 3 month comp for 5 referrals
Get a 6 month comp for 25 referrals
To learn more, check out Substack’s FAQ.
As for Group Subscriptions, they’re pretty self-explanatory: Groups such as families, companies, firms and so on can sign up multiple people for paid subscriptions. Click on this button at the bottom of any post published from this year on and Substack will walk you through the process. And yes, existing subscribers can be added to a group. Sign up two or more people and receive a 20% discount.
Thank you for helping get the word out about Taking Up More Room!
Awesome Repertory Screenings In 2024
Also this year, and this is huge if anyone’s a classic film lover or a film lover in general, there are repertory screenings galore ahead. It’s no shock, because Hollywood’s output is set to be pretty meager this year due to the writer’s and SAG-AFTRA strikes, and Fathom Events, who’s hosting these screenings along with Cinemark, has picked some good ones.
On the docket:
January: The Wizard of Oz (1939)
February: My Fair Lady (1964)
March: Labyrinth (1986)
April: Gone With the Wind (1939)
May: Steel Magnolias (1989)
June: South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut (1999)
July: The NeverEnding Story (1984)
August: Rear Window (1954)
September: Blazing Saddles (1974)
October: Mean Girls (2004)
November: The Fifth Element (1997)
December: White Christmas (1954)
2024 is the second year of Fathom’s repertory series, and I don’t know about the rest of you, but I plan on catching as many of these films as possible. If anyone’s interested more details can be found here.
Yep, this year might be pretty exciting, and I hope it’s in a good way.
