Stop Poisoning the Well, Hollywood. Please.
I was going to review The Gray Man for today’s article, but at the eleventh hour found I wasn’t in the mood for scenes of torture and espionage, so I decided to tackle Persuasion, the new Netflix film. It seemed safer.
Heh. Safer. Nope. Turns out there’s been a firestorm of criticism leveled at the film by Jane Austen fans because the new movie seems to be closer to Bridgerton and Bridget Jones than mainline Jane Austen. The media have responded to the backlash in their usual diplomatic fashion, albeit in a more varied way than at other times. Some of them are resorting to the old, tired cry of “Racism!” while others are more level-headed.
Me, I’m just weary of the needlessly combative, overly vitriolic dynamic that Hollywood and social media have cultivated. Very, very weary.
