Who else is a fan of Gilmore Girls? It’s one of my absolute favorite shows and I can’t believe it’s twenty-five years old.
For those who might not be familiar with the show’s premise, it’s about single mom Lorelai Gilmore and her daughter, Rory, who live in Stars Hollow, an idyllic and quirky small town in Connecticut. Lorelai had Rory when she was sixteen, so they’re more best friends than mother and daughter, although Lorelai does play the mom card quite a bit.
Gilmore Girls originally premiered on the WB on October 5, 2000 and ran until May 15, 2007. It’s still hugely popular and set to run on Netflix until 2026 at least. Hulu has picked it up as well and those behind that service are no doubt seeing dollar signs everywhere. There’s also been a mini-series, A Year In the Life on Netflix, which, like the original series, will be on Netflix at least until 2026, and of course, the show is widely available in physical media.
What makes Gilmore Girls so beloved, even twenty-five years later? The writing is superb. The characters are nicely fleshed-out. It’s full of witty banter and nothing’s dumbed down. The themes are universal. Most of all, people love the dynamics between all the characters, especially Lorelai and Rory. Family relationships never go out of style.
So yeah, starting next week, I thought it would be fun to look back on a few episodes of the series every Thursday this year, even the widely-scorned Season Seven (but we’ll get to that) and A Day In the Life. I don’t really have an end date; it’ll last as long as it lasts.
I’ll keep up on the usual review schedule, of course, but this will be a bonus, and while most posts will be for paid subscribers, every now and then I’ll post a freebie so everyone can get an occasional taste.
Hope you all like these trips back to Stars Hollow…
I liked this show but my daughter LOVES it. Everything she likes has made me look at with new eyes and heart. It's not too shabby.
